About the Product

Bring the traditional art of Japanese matcha preparation into your home with the Isshiki Bamboo Matcha Whisk (Chasen). Handcrafted from a single piece of bamboo, this elegant tea-making tool is designed to blend finely powdered matcha with water, creating a smooth consistency and the delicate foam characteristic of properly whisked matcha.

The chasen has long been an essential part of Japanese matcha preparation. Unlike an ordinary kitchen whisk or spoon, its numerous slender bamboo tines move gently through the tea, helping disperse the powder evenly while incorporating air into the mixture. The result is a more refined drinking experience that allows the matcha's texture and flavour to develop naturally.

Each Isshiki whisk is carefully carved by skilled artisans, combining lightweight construction with flexible yet resilient bamboo tines. Its simple, functional design reflects the thoughtful craftsmanship associated with traditional Japanese tea utensils. It is also the same style of whisk used by Isshiki at its New York City café.

Whether you're preparing your first bowl of matcha or refining a well-established daily ritual, the Isshiki Bamboo Matcha Whisk makes the process both practical and enjoyable. With proper care, this traditional utensil can become a familiar part of your everyday tea preparation.

Ingredients & Nutrition

Primary material: Natural bamboo.

Hand-carved from a single piece of bamboo with slender, flexible tines designed for whisking matcha.

How to Use

Preparing Your Matcha

  1. Soften the tines: Before whisking, briefly soak the bamboo tips in warm water to help soften them and reduce the risk of breakage.
  2. Prepare the matcha: Sift approximately 1–2g of matcha powder into a matcha bowl.
  3. Add water: Pour in approximately 60–80ml of hot water, ideally around 70–80°C (158–176°F).
  4. Whisk: Hold the chasen lightly and whisk briskly in a gentle W- or M-shaped motion, keeping the tips just above the bottom of the bowl.
  5. Finish: Continue until the matcha is evenly dispersed and a fine layer of foam develops.

Care & Maintenance

Rinse the whisk gently with warm water immediately after use. Avoid detergents, dishwashers and prolonged soaking. Allow it to air-dry upright, ideally on a bamboo whisk holder (kusenaoshi), to help preserve the shape of the tines.

Store in a dry, well-ventilated location and avoid forcing the delicate bamboo tips against the bowl.

The Art of Whisking Matcha

Preparing matcha is a simple process, yet the tools used can make a noticeable difference to the finished drink. A traditional bamboo chasen is specifically designed to combine finely ground tea with water, helping break up remaining clumps and produce the smooth, lightly aerated texture that makes whisked matcha so enjoyable.

The whisk's delicate bamboo tines are arranged to move efficiently through the tea without requiring excessive force. A quick, controlled zigzag motion creates a fine layer of foam while bringing the powder and water together into an even consistency.

Beyond its practical purpose, the chasen introduces a small element of ritual into daily life. Measuring the tea, warming the bowl and whisking with care can transform an ordinary drink into a few quiet minutes of attention. It is a reminder that even familiar routines can become more meaningful when approached deliberately.
