About the Book

Letters from a Stoic, also known as the Moral Letters to Lucilius, contains the surviving correspondence written by Seneca the Younger during the later years of his life.

Across 124 letters addressed to Lucilius, Seneca considers both everyday experiences and some of life's largest questions. Topics include time, mortality, friendship, fear, adversity, wealth, happiness, virtue and the pursuit of wisdom.

Many letters begin with a simple observation or event before developing into a broader philosophical reflection. This conversational structure makes Seneca's Stoicism unusually approachable, allowing readers to encounter the philosophy through practical situations rather than abstract theory alone.

At its heart, Letters from a Stoic asks what constitutes a good life and encourages the development of character, perspective and inner independence in a world whose external circumstances cannot always be controlled.

About the Author

Lucius Annaeus Seneca, commonly known as Seneca the Younger, was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist and writer who lived from approximately 4 BC to 65 AD.

Seneca became one of the most prominent intellectual and political figures of his era and served as an advisor to Roman emperor Nero. His philosophical writings focused extensively on virtue, wisdom, mortality, adversity, anger, friendship and the responsible use of time.

Unlike philosophy concerned primarily with abstract argument, much of Seneca's work examines how philosophical principles can guide ordinary decisions and help people respond to the uncertainties of life.

His essays and letters became foundational works of Roman Stoicism, and Letters from a Stoic remains one of the most widely read sources of practical Stoic philosophy today.
